Is There Such a Thing as a Breast Reduction for Men?
Written by GCS - Staff Sunday, August 07 2011 11:54Hypnosis has been offered for certain types of surgery at the Belgian hospital, Cliniques Universitaires St. Luc in Brussels, since 2003. Hundreds of patients have chosen it over general anesthesia.
According to the AP, more than 8,000 surgeries have been performed at another Belgian hospital with hypnosis. The technique has become popular in France and Belgium in recent years and some plastic and facial surgeons in Germany also use hypnosis, as well as some British dental surgeons.
During surgery, patients are sedated but aware and doctors say recovery time is faster and the need for painkillers is reduced.
The AP reports that doctors say nearly any surgery usually done with a local anesthetic could work with hypnosis and less pain medicine. There are plenty of believers in hypnosis who say it dulls a patients' sense of pain and cuts down on the need for anesthetic.
In the end, it leads to faster recoveries and monetary savings on the part of hospitals. However, hypnosis may require doctors to spend more time with patients beforehand to do the hypnosis and they may need more careful monitoring during surgery. With its growing popularity, the French Society of Anesthesiologists created a special hypnosis branch in their organization last year.

A New Trend in Cosmetic Enhancement: The Mommy Makeover

Written by SCOTT HENSLEY Monday, July 11 2011 13:03A Touchy Situation For Sunscreen At Camp
Even under the best of circumstances, it's tough to get squirmy kids to cooperate when it comes to sun protection. But just in time for summer, the state of Maryland dropped some rules on camps that put more hurdles in the way of getting sunblock on kids' skin. Parents would have to give the camp written permission (just like the kind for a prescription medicine) for their kids to use sunscreen and also provide the stuff, preferably a type that would be easy for children to put on themselves. Camp staffers were discouraged from helping kids apply UV-blocking goop and to touch them as little as possible when doing so.
Silicone Breast Implants: Safe, With Caveats
Written by GRETCHEN CUDA-KROEN Monday, July 11 2011 11:51Ruptured Implants Can Require Surgery
Take Kate Marion. She had silicone implants for breast augmentation in her late 20s. Just shy of two decades later she noticed something unusual. "When I was crossing my left arm across my body — for instance, to put lotion on my right arm — I would make a little noise from my armpit, the way little boys do when they stick their hand in their armpit and pump their arm up and down," Marion says. "A little tooty noise." An MRI showed both her implants had burst. Her doctor immediately recommended removing them, which she did. Marion hasn't suffered any apparent harm from her ruptured implants, and she even confesses to having an occasional twinge of regret that she didn't have them replaced when she had the old ones removed. But ultimately she decided she didn't want to go through more surgery.
Many of my patients from Southern California who get referred to our practice by previous patients request to do something about their necks. This is one of the most common complaints we hear from both men and women in their early forties to late seventies. For many individuals the issue is excess fat under the chin, which creates what we call a "Double chin." The jaw lines and neck are not well defined, and the person's face just appears to be connected to the neck area. In some instances, the issue is loose and droopy neck and jowl skin and not excess fat. This is referred to a "turkey neck." Some individuals also have concern about circular wrinkles around the neck, which I call "ring wrinkles."
When performing facial plastic surgery, the surgeon must be able to provide the desired results while maintaining a natural unoperated appearance. This of primary consideration especially in face lift surgeries, and begins and ends with the design and planning of the incisions. Over the past decades many different techniques have been described and proposed.
The design of the incision and the extent of undermining will vary depending on the facial contour, degree of skin laxity, and advancement the plastic surgeon desires for the needs of the patient. To obtain a natural result the surgeon must avoid hair loss or readjustment of the hair line, changes in normal anatomical structures and obvious placement of incisions. These sequelae are commonly seen with temporal hair loss, stair-steps hair loss of the occipital region, loss and/or distortion of the tragus and earlobes, and visible scarring.
