Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

Eyelid Surgery Right for Me in Newport BeachBlepharoplasty might be right for you! Commonly known as eyelid surgery, it is a surgical procedure performed on the lower or upper eyelid to enhance the appearance around the eye. This procedure is used to improve drooping or redundant skin that appears on the upper eyelid.

As we get older, the eyelid loses elasticity. Forehead structures that act as the support for skin also weakens, which can lead to skin that hangs past the edge of the brow. Whats more, the fat and muscles of the upper eyelid can experience degradation, leading to an unappealing bulge.

Traditionally, blepharoplasty includes removing excess skin from the upper lid to restore a youthful appearance resulting in a nice, smooth look. It can also be used to remove a bulging lid.

Lower eyelid procedures are often performed to correct “bags” underneath the eyes which may be caused from fat buildup behind the eye.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty Cosmetic Surgery

  • Enhances baggy skin under the eyes
  • Repairs droopy upper eyelids
  • Lifts eye lashes that droop and impair vision.

The surgery can treat a medical condition called ptosis (drooping eyelid), caused by poor muscle tone or nerve damage. Ptosis makes the eyelids hang very low and very often block vision. Blepharoplasty will not help a drooping brow or remove wrinkles, however. These common occurrences are usually corrected with other types of cosmetic surgery such as a face or brow lift.

Why Eyelid Surgery?

As we age, excess skin forms around our eyes and the skin loses elasticity. Furthermore, fatty tissue may accumulate under the skin. Even with a good skin and eye care routine; puffiness, wrinkles, and drooping eyelids will likely occur. Of course, DNA has a lot to do with the way we age and can even cause these types of aging effects in young people. Fortunately, plastic surgery has the potential to restore a youthful and renewed appearance to your eyes.

Is Eyelid surgery Right for Me? Who should have the surgery?

Physically healthy, well-informed about the procedure and emotionally stable individuals present as ideal candidates. In addition, they are typically 35 years of age. Candidates could be excluded if they suffer from any one of the following conditions: hypothyroidism, unstable cardiovascular disease, unstable diabetes, severe glaucoma, severe dry eyes, uncontrolled blood pressure, or Graves’ disease. These are serious conditions that might undermine the surgery and degrade the patients health.

The Procedure

In the majority of cases the surgery is performed in an outpatient basis or in office setting after administering oral sedation and local anesthesia. It can also be performed in combination with other procedures like facelift or forehead lift. For upper blepharoplasty, small incisions are made across the upper eyelid creases, then excess skin and fat is removed. When removing just fatty tissue from lower lids, the surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty by making incisions inside the lower lid and excise the excess fatty tissue without external incisions. If there is any excess lower lid skin, then incisions are made externally right below the eyelashes and well hidden in the creases.

The surgeon then divides the fatty tissue and muscle from the skin so that extra skin, fat, or muscle can be removed. Skin is closed with very fine sutures and these sutures are removed within one week. Patients can expect temporary swelling and bruising after the procedure that will gradually heal and disappear in a week with help of icing and keeping head elevated. Avoiding blood thinners like Aspirin and Motrin as well some herbal vitamins will help reduce bruising. Arnica Montana can also help reduce the bruising and swelling when taken a few days prior to surgery. Most important of all, risks and complications can be minimized if the surgery is performed by a well-qualified and experienced facial plastic surgeon.
