Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that allows a doctor to adjust the shape and prominence of a patent’s ears relative to their face.
The procedure can help to correct for misshapen ears as well as ears that may protrude unnaturally from a person’s head.
Many of these conditions can be performed in a single office visit and will last a lifetime. The difference a small change like this can make for a child or an adult with misshapen ears can be amazing and can help boost their self-confidence and their appearance.
Because the ear is composed of mostly cartilage, the patient must be at least five years old to have the procedure. By this age, the cartilage that supports the structure of the ear has matured to the size it will maintain throughout adulthood and allows for changes to the shape and angle of the ear to be made. These adjustments usually involve contouring this cartilage to provide a more natural shape to the ear. Another technique can adjust how far a patient’s ear protrudes from their head by adding a slight bump to the curve of the inner surface of the ear. These procedures can almost always be performed under local anesthetic for adults and general anesthetic for younger children.
When considering ear surgery for yourself or your children, it is important to find a skilled cosmetic surgeon to ensure the proper results.
Dr. Sadati has been performing this type of procedure for years in Orange County and has the experience needed to correct any ear problem. During that time he has developed extensive techniques to minimize the amount of surgery needed to accomplish most ear adjustments and will provide a very natural look after the procedure is completed.
Any surgery that Dr. Sadati performs is typically done at the rear of the ear itself, which eliminates any visible clue that a patient’s ear has been contoured. The entire procedure normally takes about an hour and the patient leaves the office with a small dressing applied that can be removed in a few days. Once the ear surgery is completed the patient can enjoy the results for the rest of their lives.
Choosing to Have Ear Pinning / Otopalsty Surgery in Orange County
Ear pinning also known as Otoplasty is one of the most life-changing surgeries performed by Dr. Kevin Sadati, a prominent Orange County facial and plastic surgeon. At a minimum, patients with prominent or misshapen ears report being called cruel names such as “Dumbo” and “Elf Ears.” In worst cases, these people become the target of teasing and bullying.
As a result, it’s very common for patients with prominent ears to become self-conscious about their appearance. Despite becoming adept at choosing hairstyles and hats to hide their ears, the teasing does permanent damage to their self-esteem.
That’s why patients in Orange County choose to have otoplasty surgery (also known as ear pinning) to adjust the shape and prominence of their ears. Oftentimes this surgery can be performed in a single office visit and the results will last a lifetime. Even a small change in your ears can bring balance to your face and a huge boost to your self-confidence!
Candidates for Ear Pinning Surgery in Orange County
You are a good candidate for ear pinning if you are willing to travel to our Orange County office and are unhappy with the size, shape or protrusion of your ears.
Unlike other plastic surgeries, ear pinning can be performed on children as young as 5-years-old. By this age, the ear cartilage is structurally mature enough to support changes to the ear’s shape and angle. To be a good candidate for ear pinning, your child must also be willing to cooperate and to follow post-surgical instructions. Many parents choose ear pinning as a way to protect their children from teasing.
Adults are good candidates for ear pinning if they are in good health and don’t have any serious problem with their ears (such as chronic ear infections). You should have realistic expectations for the surgery. If you do smoke, you’ll be asked to stop for at least three weeks before and after the procedure, as smoking can delay the healing process.
The best way to determine if you (or your child) are a good candidate for ear pinning is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sadati at our Orange County office.

How Ear Pinning Surgery is Performed
Dr. Sadati, an expert in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, has more than a decade of experience performing facial surgery. Your ear pinning will be performed in our beautiful Newport Beach office in Orange County, California.
Ear pinning is performed using general anesthesia (for children) and IV sedation (for adults). Dr. Sadati goes to great lengths to create a calm and comforting atmosphere for patients of all ages. Dr. Sadati does not begin surgery until patients are completely relaxed and comfortable.
All of Dr. Sadati’s surgical team are genuinely caring and sympathetic to his patients’ needs. The staff speaks softly and gently, which gives patients confidence during their procedure and contributes to a positive and reassuring experience. Often patients are so relaxed that they drift off to sleep!
Ear pinning surgery begins with a careful incision just behind the ear, where it is joined to the head. If necessary, Dr. Sadati can sculpt the ear. Sculpting is performed by removing a small amount of cartilage to create a more natural shape. Dr. Sadati can also adjust how far a patient’s ear protrudes from their head by adding a slight bump to the curve of the ear’s inner surface.
This incision is closed with tiny sutures. Once the ear reshaping is done, Dr. Sadati will use sutures to anchor the ear closer to the head.
Recovery from Ear Pinning / Otoplasty Surgery in Orange County
After your surgery, you’ll be encouraged to sit up and then walk around. We offer refreshments and beverages that include filtered water and a nutritious anti-oxidant drink. As a precaution, your vital signs will be closely monitored and you’ll be discharged only after a thorough post-op review. You will need to have someone drive you home following your surgery.
You will wake up from surgery with soft dressings around your ears. You will not be able to put any pressure on your ears for one week, so you will need to sleep on your back. You must also avoid any activity that has the potential to put pressure on your ears. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you may need to wear a headband for up to one week to hold your ears in place. Most of the swelling will dissipate after 72 hours, however it can take up to three months for the final result to be visible.
You may feel some aching in the days following surgery. This can generally be managed with over-the-counter painkillers. Dr. Kevin Sadati also suggests using a homeopathic remedy called Arnica Montana to reduce inflammation and aid in your recovery. Most patients return to work after one week.
Customer service is a key component of our practice, and Dr. Sadati will personally call you to follow up after your surgery. You will be given Dr. Sadati’s 24 hour contact number in case you need assistance outside of business hours.
