The blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to enhance a person’s appearance and rejuvenate their eyes. Commonly referred to as the upper eyelid lift, this cosmetic surgery has the ability to take years off of a person’s face, but it also can serve as a functional surgical procedure. Dr. Kevin Sadati is a board certified facial plastic surgeon who has been performing the blepharoplasty for more than 10 years in Newport Beach. He takes a unique approach to each upper eyelid lift that he performs, ensuring that every Orange County patient gets the personalized results that they deserve.
How Does the Blepharoplasty Improve a Person’s Appearance?
At its core, the upper eyelid lift is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to enhance the appearance of a person’s face. The upper eyelid lift will not eliminate dark circles from a person’s eyes, but it will reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles at the crease of the eyes. Gravity can cause the upper eyelid to droop into a person’s eyes, and make them appear tired and worn out. The upper eyelid lift will literally lift the lid from the person’s eyes, brightening up their appearance and allowing them to look well rested, energized and ready for anything.
What Structural Benefits Does the Blepharoplasty Offer?
While it is primarily a cosmetic procedure, the blepharoplasty can also provide patients with structural improvements. For some patients, the drooping lid is so severe that it actually impairs their vision. By lifting the lid from the eye, patients are able to see better and can enjoy their lives more. It gives people the opportunity to drive, read and watch their favorite TV shows again — all without worrying that they aren’t quite seeing everything they want and need.
Am I a Good Candidate for the Upper Eyelid Lift?
The upper eyelid lift is a major surgical procedure, and any patient who is considering this cosmetic surgery should be in good general health. Patients should also be experiencing the initial signs of aging around their eyes, such as drooping eyelids and sagging skin around the crease of their eyes. The average patient is older than 35, but patients are able to have this procedure done at any age if it is necessary.
After the upper eyelid lift has been performed, many patients report that they feel more confident each time they look in the mirror. In addition, friends and family note that they appear more energized, more rested and more excited about life. To find out more information about the blepharoplasty procedure and to find out if an upper eyelid lift is the right cosmetic procedure for you, set up a free cosmetic consultation with Dr. Kevin Sadati today.
Choosing to Have Upper Eyelid Surgery in Orange County
Men and women in Orange County want to look as young as they feel. Unfortunately, it can be hard to look youthful when you have saggy upper eyelids that obscure part of your eyes. Patients contact Dr. Kevin Sadati, a prominent Orange County facial plastic surgeon, about upper eyelid surgery after being repeatedly told that they look tired and/or angry, despite feeling happy and well-rested.
Changes to your upper eyelids are a natural part of the aging process, because your aging skin loses flexibility and succumbs to gravity. Although this aging process occurs all over your body, it is particularly apparent with your eyelids – the place people focus when they are talking to you. Unfortunately, when the skin at the edge of your eyelids starts to sag, it can make you appear tired.
Upper eyelid surgery (technically known as an upper blepharoplasty) is designed to reverse the natural aging process by removing excess tissue and fat from your upper eyelids. The result is a more rested, youthful appearance.
Benefits of Upper Eyelid Surgery in Orange County
Eyelid surgery offers many cosmetic benefits. Reducing sagging upper eyelids can make you look younger, less fatigued and more approachable. Altering your upper eyelids can make your entire face appear younger. Your self-esteem improves as people comment that you look rested and refreshed – like you’ve just come back from a vacation!
Many people are surprised that upper eyelid surgery also has functional benefits. Drooping upper eyelids interfere with vision. Not only does this cause eye strain, headaches and fatigue — it also causes strain on the neck as you tilt your chin upward so that you can see. The visual impairment caused by drooping upper eyelids can reduce peripheral vision and cause safety issues when driving.
Candidates for Upper Eyelid Surgery in Orange County
You are a good eyelid surgery candidate if you are willing to travel to our Orange County office and believe that your upper eyelids make you look older than you feel. You are also a good candidate if you feel that your upper eyelids are restricting your vision, causing headaches or creating neck pain.
You should also be in good health and not have any serious problems with your eyes. You should have realistic expectations for your upper eyelid surgery and be willing to follow Dr. Sadati’s post-surgical instructions. If you do smoke, you’ll be asked to stop for at least three weeks before and after the procedure, as smoking can delay the healing process.
The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sadati at our Orange County office.
Your Upper Eyelid Surgery Consultation
Unlike many surgeons, Dr. Sadati takes time to get to know his patients. You will have an extensive consultation. During your consultation, you’ll discuss how you want your eyes to look, as well as your medical history (including surgery to your face and eyes).
Dr. Sadati will look at your facial anatomy to determine what is causing your upper eyelids to droop. This may be due to excess skin on the eyelid or to the stretching of muscles in your forehead. Dr. Sadati will look at your anatomy and decide if upper eyelid surgery will create the more youthful, rested appearance that you desire. After his examination, Dr. Sadati will tell you honestly if you are a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery.
Upper eyelid surgery will address concerns with your upper eyelids. If desired, upper eyelid surgery can also be combined with lower eyelid surgery or other procedures. This enables you to minimize recovery time and accelerates your cosmetic transformation. It is also more cost-effective to combine multiple procedures.
Dr. Sadati believes in patient education. He will discuss upper eyelid surgery with you in detail and answer all of your questions. You will understand your surgical plan prior to surgery. You will leave the consultation knowing that Dr. Sadati cares about you and wants the best results possible from your upper eyelid surgery.
How Upper Eyelid Surgery is Performed
Your eyelid surgery will be performed in our beautiful Newport Beach office in Orange County, California. Prior to surgery, you will completely understand your surgical plan and know how long your surgery will take.
For your safety, your surgery will be performed using IV sedation. Dr. Sadati goes to great lengths to create a calm and comforting atmosphere, which alleviates much of our patients’ stress. You will be completely relaxed by medications such as Valium and Benadryl.
All of Dr. Sadati’s surgical team are genuinely caring and sympathetic to his patients’ needs. The staff speaks softly and gently, which gives patients confidence during their procedure and contributes to a positive and reassuring experience. Frequently patients are so relaxed that they drift off to sleep. Dr. Sadati will not start the surgery until you are completely relaxed and comfortable.
Upper eyelid surgery begins with a careful incision within the natural crease of the eyelid. Dr. Sadati will then remove excess skin, tighten muscles, and remove or reposition fat deposits. The incision is closed with tiny sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape.
Recovery from Upper Eyelid Surgery in Orange County
With a local anesthetic, you will not experience any surgical after-effects such as nausea or grogginess. Instead, when your eyelid surgery is complete, you’ll be encouraged to sit up and then walk around. We offer refreshments and beverages that include filtered water and a nutritious anti-oxidant drink.
As a precaution, your vital signs will be closely monitored and you’ll be discharged only after a thorough post-op review. You will be given eye ointments and instructions about how to care for your incisions. You will need to have someone drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours following your surgery.
Customer service is a key component of our practice, and Dr. Sadati will personally call you to follow up after your surgery. You will be given Dr. Sadati’s 24 hour contact number in case you need assistance outside of business hours.
After your upper eyelid surgery you may experience bruising and swelling around your incisions. Your vision may be blurry or you may have double vision. Your eyes may feel itchy, dry or teary. You cannot rub your eyes! You may notice that your eyes are fatigued and that you are sensitive to light. If this is the case, Dr. Sadati recommends that you wear dark sunglasses — especially when going outdoors.
For the first week after your procedure, Dr. Sadati recommends that you avoid activities that dry your eyes. You will also not be able to wear contact lenses for two weeks following the surgery.
Swelling can be minimized by using cold compresses on your eyes and elevating your head while you are sleeping. You should also avoid any activities (such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise) that increase the blood flow to your face.
Dr. Sadati will provide ointments to help with the healing process. He also suggests using a homeopathic remedy called Arnica Montana to reduce inflammation and aid in your recovery.
After five days, you will return to our Orange County office to have your stitches removed. At that time, you can return to work as long as you don’t wear makeup. You can return to wearing makeup and exercising in two to three weeks. The final results are visible within eight weeks.
Risks of Upper Eyelid Surgery
Dr. Sadati will explain the risks of upper eyelid surgery. These include infection, excessive bleeding and difficulty healing. It is also possible for eyelid surgery to injure your eye muscles or permanently damage your vision. These risks are lessened by choosing an experienced facial plastic surgeon, by providing a thorough medical history, and by thoroughly following your pre-surgical and post-surgical instructions.
