There are two types of implants to choose from: saline or silicone. Once the choice has been made, saline or silicone breast implants are inserted under (behind) the pectoralis muscle (submuscular) or over the muscle (subglandular) and under the breast tissue. Prior to surgery, both the surgeon and the patient will decide what would be the best surgical placement of the implants as well as the size of the implants in proportion to the patient’s overall body frame, height and weight. Ultimately, having breast augmentation will result in having proportional, shapely breasts and an improved self-image.
For some women, they may not need breast augmentation, but rather a breast lift or ‘Mastopexy’. A Mastopexy is done in order to fix ptosis (sagging of the breasts). Sagging of the breast can be caused by having multiple pregnancies, weight gain or loss, or gravity taking its toll on the breast tissue. (See “Mommy Makeovers”). For some men, they too can have this same complaint, but for men, it’s called having male breast reduction or ‘Gynecomastia’. This procedure will lift their chest and get rid of the excess skin and excess fat.
