Correcting Your Deviated Nasal Septum

A deviated nasal septum is a relatively common deformity in the nasal structure. People might have a deviated septum as a result of genetics, or this condition can occur after an injury to the nose. People who suffer from a deviated septum may find that they have difficulty exercising because it is hard to breathe. They may feel like they always have a stuffy nose. They also might snore excessively, and even have a hard time sleeping through the night. Orange County patients with a deviated septum can correct this issue by having a septoplasty performed. Dr. Kevin Sadati is an expert ENT surgeon who is based out of Newport Beach and has significant experience performing the septoplasty operation.

How Can I Prepare for the Septoplasty Surgery?

Schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Kevin Sadati in order to be sure that this is the right procedure for you. During the initial consultation, Dr. Kevin Sadati will perform an exam on you and determine whether you have a deviated septum. He will discuss the options that are available to you, and create a customized surgical plan that is designed specifically for your individual needs.

Follow all pre-operative instructions that are provided to you by the surgeon. You will need to stop taking any blood-thinning medications at least 2 weeks prior to the surgery. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium. You also should stop smoking and drinking 2 weeks before the surgery. You will be advised to provide the surgeon with your medical history, including any allergies to anesthetics. This will prevent complications from arising during the operation.

Create a care plan for yourself and ask for help from a friend or relative. You will be under general anesthesia for the procedure and will need someone to drive you home after it is complete. You may need help and assistance for about 24-48 hours after the operation, and a caretaker should available during this time. Be sure that you have a plan ahead of time so that there are no unexpected circumstances that arise after the procedure is complete.

You do not have to live your life dealing with the symptoms associated with a deviated septum. This procedure is a viable option for anyone who has a deviated septum and wants to improve their quality of life. It is commonly performed as an outpatient procedure, and most patients will spend about 7-10 days recovering from the operation. This surgery is designed to provide the patient with structural rather than aesthetic improvements. Patients who want to improve the appearance of their nose at the same time can discuss their options with Dr. Kevin Sadati.
