Choosing to Have a Breast Reduction in Orange County
Women who live in Orange County want to feel confident about their bodies. This can be difficult when you are weighed down by large breasts, which can be the source of both physical and emotional pain. Not only do large breasts make it difficult to find fashionable clothing or participate in physical activities, they can also make you the target of teasing. For many women, having a breast reduction — a surgical procedure known as a reduction mammoplasty – can be a life-changing surgery that reduces pain and improves self-esteem.
For Dr. Kevin Sadati, a prominent Orange County plastic and reconstructive surgeon, being able to perform breast reduction surgery is extremely gratifying. Women are excited to wake up from their breast reduction with obviously lighter chests — and quickly notice the absence of neck and back pain. During follow-up appointments, the most common comment we hear is: “Why did I wait so long?”
In addition to breast reductions, Dr. Sadati treats women who seek breast augmentation or who need reconstruction following breast surgery. With more than a decade of experience delivering impeccable results to the most discerning Orange County patients, Dr. Sadati has earned a reputation for providing some of the highest quality breast surgery available.
As a painter and sculptor, Dr. Kevin Sadati blends art and medical science to create beautiful, natural-looking results in his cosmetic surgery patients. Through his experience, surgical finesse and artistic talent, Dr. Kevin Sadati has become one of the most sought after plastic surgeons in Orange County.
Candidates for a Breast Reduction in Orange County
You are a good candidate for breast reduction if you are willing to travel to our Orange County office and feel that your breasts are too large or heavy. Your breasts must be fully developed and you should be at least 16-years-old.
As someone who is considering breast reduction surgery, you likely experience back and neck pain due to the weight of your breasts. You may have indentations on your shoulders from your bra straps. You may also be experiencing skin irritation (such as rashes) caused by your breasts or support garments. Additionally, the size of your breasts may be causing poor posture or difficulty sleeping.
The size of your breasts may also be limiting your daily activities. Dr. Sadati sees many teenagers who are involved in sports — such as swimming and dance — who complain that the combination of large breasts and revealing clothing makes it hard to fully participate.
Finally, you are a good candidate for breast reduction if you are being emotionally and physically harassed due to the size of your breasts. Unfortunately this is a common scenario that can cause women to feel ashamed of their bodies.
An Ideal candidate should be in good health and a nonsmoker. If you do smoke, you’ll be asked to stop for at least three weeks before and after your breast reduction, as smoking can delay the healing process. You must also be willing to follow Dr. Sadati’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions, which include wearing a support garment for the month following surgery.
Ideal candidates will have good skin quality and realistic expectations for the breast reduction. You will have scars on your breasts, although these will fade over time.
The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for a breast reduction is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sadati at our Orange County office.
Your Breast Reduction Consultation
Unlike many surgeons, Dr. Sadati takes time to get to know his patients. You will have an extensive consultation. During your consultation, you’ll discuss your goals for your breast reduction as well as your medical history. If you plan to become pregnant in the future, Dr. Sadati will help you determine whether a breast reduction at this time is the right decision.
Dr. Sadati will examine you carefully. He will look at the quality of your skin; the amount of breast tissue; the size and shape of your breasts; the shape of your areola; and the symmetry of your breasts. Dr. Sadati will advise you if you are a good candidate for a breast reduction and, if so, the ideal size of your reduced breast. The goal of the breast reduction is to create breasts that are beautiful, natural looking and balanced with your body.
Dr. Sadati believes in patient education. He will discuss the breast reduction process with you in detail and answer all of your questions.
Dr. Sadati will also discuss the location of your incisions. Dr. Sadati’s choice of incision depends on your preference (including whether you will be breastfeeding in the future), your anatomy, your personal goals, and the amount of glandular tissue being removed. Incisions can be located at the crease beneath the breast (infra-mammary incision); at the border between the breast skin and the areola (the peri-areolar incision); vertically from the breast crease to the areola (a lollipop incision); and along the bottom of the breast to the area around the areola (an anchor incision). As much as possible, incisions are hidden in the natural folds of your body or around the areola.
You will leave the consultation knowing that Dr. Sadati cares about you and wants the best results possible from your breast reduction.
Planning for your Breast Reduction
You must plan to have someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 48 hours after your surgery so that you can rest.
A breast reduction is major surgery. Dr. Sadati recommends that you put your recovery first and seek the help you need. For the first couple of days, you may find it difficult to lift your arms over your head and may need help with personal activities. You need to avoid bending and straining, as it may cause swelling.
For up to four weeks after the surgery, you will have some restriction in movement and will not be able to lift more than ten pounds. You will need help with young children, pets, and household chores such as meal preparation and laundry.
You must wear a compression garment or surgical bra 24/7 for the first month following your surgery. You must also sleep on your back during this time. Dr. Sadati will explain how to care for your scars, which will fade over time. You may not wear under wire bras for the first month following your surgery.
Breast Reduction Surgery in Orange County
Your breast lift reduction will be performed in our beautiful Newport Beach office in Orange County, California.
During your consultation, Dr. Sadati will have explained his surgical plan. You will know the location of your incisions and the amount of tissue being removed. Your surgery will be performed using general anesthesia and will take approximately three hours.
Immediately before your surgery, Dr. Sadati will make marks on your breasts and also answer any last-minute questions.
All of Dr. Sadati’s surgical team are genuinely caring and sympathetic to his patients’ needs. The staff speaks softly and gently, which gives patients confidence during their breast reduction and contributes to a positive and reassuring experience. You will not feel any pain or remember your surgery.
Dr. Sadati begins the surgery by making careful incisions around your areola, down the front of your breast, and in the crease beneath your breast. He will then remove the amount of fat, tissue and skin needed to elevate your nipple and create a smaller, more natural looking breast. In patients with extremely large breasts, the nipple will be removed and grafted back in place.
Incisions are carefully closed using layers of fine sutures. Skin may be closed using sutures, adhesives or surgical tape. Your incisions will be protected with a surgical dressing.
Recovering from Breast Reduction Surgery
You will wake up with a compression garment around your breasts. You may also have drains in your breasts to collect excess fluid. Because Dr. Sadati uses a nerve blocking technique that lasts about nine hours, you will not be in any pain immediately after your breast reduction.
You will immediately notice that your breasts are smaller and feel lighter!
Our recovery nurses will carefully monitor you after surgery. Once you recover from surgery, they will give you prescriptions for pain management and explain how to take care of your incisions and drains. You will be allowed to go home the same day. You must have someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 48 hours after your surgery so that you can rest.
Customer service is a key component of our practice, and Dr. Sadati will personally call you to follow up after your breast reduction. You will be given Dr. Sadati’s 24 hour contact number in case you need assistance outside of business hours.
For the first two days, you will find it difficult to lift your arms over your head. You will need assistance with your medication, meals and personal needs. Some patients experience very little pain and describe their breasts as feeling tender, swollen or bruised. Dr. Sadati highly recommends icing your breasts to reduce swelling. He also recommends a homeopathic remedy called Arnica Montana to help speed your healing process.
For the month following surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment 24/7. You must also sleep on your back to give your breasts time to heal. Because you cannot lift more than ten pounds, you will need help with your children, pets and household chores. You can return to office work after a week and normal physical activity after one month. Swelling may occur for up to three months following your breast reduction.
Complications of a Breast Reduction
Short-term risks of a breast reduction include bleeding, numbness and infection. Long-term complications include persistent numbness or pain. There is also a chance that your breasts will be asymmetrical and need a second surgery. Dr. Sadati will thoroughly explain the risks of a breast reduction so that you can make an informed decision.
Many of the complications from a breast reduction can be reduced by choosing a skilled surgeon. You can also reduce your risks by providing a thorough medical history, as well as carefully following Dr. Sadati’s instructions before and after your surgery. In general, patients are delighted with the results of their breast reduction.
