What to Expect After a Blepharoplasty Procedure

Known by most people in Orange County as the eyelid surgery, the blepharoplasty is becoming increasingly popular among patients who are looking to improve their appearance and to reduce the impact of aging on their face. The goal of this surgery is to eliminate excess lines and wrinkles around the eyes, allowing them to appear as they did during a person’s youth.

The blepharoplasty can allow a Newport Beach patient to not only look younger, but to also appear rejuvenated and more energized. Patients who are interested in this procedure should take the time to understand what the recovery process will be like after the operation.

What Can I Expect After the Blepharoplasty?

The initial recovery for the blepharoplasty will last for about two to four weeks.

Patients will find that there is significant swelling in the area surrounding the eyes. This is normal and to be expected after the surgery. The region surrounding the eyes is especially sensitive. This swelling will subside significantly within the first several weeks following the operation.

Patients should note that while the initial swelling will subside within several weeks, they still may not realize their final results for several month

The average complete recovery takes about 6 months. Typically, by the end of this first six months, all swelling will have completely subsided and scars will have healed.

Patients should expect their eyes to feel tight and swollen after the surgery. This is normal and will subside as the healing process continue

Once the swelling subsides, the tight feeling surrounding the eyes will begin to disappear. In the days immediately following the surgery, the eyelids may stick together. If this happens, patients can use a cotton swab dipped in warm water and can gently dab their eyelashes. This will help the eyelids be able to gently separate again while still preserving the results of the surgery.

After the surgery is complete, patients should rest with their heads elevated at all times

This will help reduce pressure on the face and reduce the amount of initial swelling. Cold compresses can be used near the eyes in order to help with discomfort, swelling and bruising after the surgery. It is important that patients take the time to lubricate the area around the eyes several times each day. This prevents the eyelids from drying out and helps to speed up the recovery process.

The blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, may be a cosmetic procedure, but it is still a significant surgery for the patient. The recovery is a pivotal part of the process, for it guarantees that the surgeon’s results are preserved for the future for the patient. Resting, relaxing and following the facial plastic surgeon’s instructions is essential during this time.

Patients who want to find out more information about their own recovery should discuss individual factors with the cosmetic surgeon during their initial consultation. Each patient will receive their own set of personalized post-operative instructions from the surgeon in order to allow for the best possible results.
