Having a baby, losing a lot of weight and general aging can leave a person with excess skin that typically settles in the midsection. Even though dieting and exercise can help you reduce the layer of fat beneath this skin, many people end up with excess skin that they feel detracts from their looks. An abdominoplasty can help eliminate this excess skin in a single office visit and leave the patient with a tighter and more natural looking abdomen.
The type of abdominoplasty a patient has will vary from person to person and is mostly dependant on where the excess skin is and the quantity. Dr. Sadati has been offering this procedure for some time in Newport Beach and has the experience to guide his patients to the right procedure for them. This experience is critical to ensure you have the exact right procedure and are completely pleased with the results.
Pregnancy may have left you with a larger amount of excess skin that is more widespread. There are two procedures called modified abdominoplasty and full abdominoplasty that can help correct for this type of situation. The choice between these two will be determined through your initial consultation with Dr. Sadati and depend on the amount and location of the skin you want to address.
Many times a patient will combine a limited liposuction procedure with their abdominoplasty to help reduce the layer of fat beneath the skin. This allows them to slim their waist and abdomen while also having the surface skin adjusted to match their new waistline. Combining these two procedures enables the patient to enjoy a fairly significant cosmetic transformation and reduce the time needed for healing.
For a more extensive transformation, especially after aggressive dieting for rapid weight loss, some patients elect to have their abdominal wall muscles tightened. This is to help correct for the stretching that naturally occurred to support the excess weight that has now been lost. This muscle wall can be tightened to reflect the new waistline and help better define the abdominal muscles as well.
If you simply lost some weight from dieting and exercise, you might be able to have a mini-abdominoplasty performed to correct for minor excess skin.
Choosing to Have a Tummy Tuck in Orange County
Having a flat, toned abdomen can help men and women in Orange County feel confident about their bodies. Unfortunately, diet and exercise may not be enough to achieve this goal – especially if you have been pregnant or have lost a great deal of weight. A tummy tuck — also known as an abdominoplasty – is a surgical procedure that can remove excess abdominal fat and skin; tighten your abdominal muscles; and restore a more youthful contour to your midsection.
For the patients of Dr. Kevin Sadati, a prominent Orange County plastic and reconstructive surgeon, the benefits of a tummy tuck are significant. Losing the droopy, saggy skin on their abdomen makes them more comfortable with their bodies. They report being excited to appear in a bathing suit or athletic wear, after years of hiding their midsections.
With more than a decade of experience delivering impeccable results to the most discerning Orange County patients, Dr. Sadati has earned a reputation for providing some of the highest quality plastic surgery available. Using his background as a painter and sculptor, Dr. Sadati blends art and medical science to create a beautiful, natural-looking abdomen that enhances your entire body. Through his experience, surgical finesse and artistic talent, Dr. Sadati has become one of the most sought after plastic surgeons in Orange County.
Candidates for a Tummy Tuck in Orange County
You are a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you are willing to travel to our Orange County office and are self-conscious about your abdomen due to pregnancy, weight loss, or the aging process.
A tummy tuck is not a substitute for diet, exercise or weight loss. Ideal candidates should be close to their ideal weight and in good physical shape. Women must have finished having children, as muscle repairs performed during an abdominoplasty can separate during subsequent pregnancies. Similarly, patients should be able to sustain an ideal weight in order to maintain the results from their tummy tuck.
An Ideal tummy tuck candidate should be in good health and a nonsmoker. If you do smoke, you’ll be asked to stop for at least three weeks before and after your tummy tuck, as smoking can delay the healing process. You must also be willing to follow Dr. Sadati’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions, which include wearing a support garment for several weeks following your tummy tuck.
Ideal candidates will have good skin quality and realistic expectations for the procedure. You will have scars on your abdomen, which will be located in the bikini area and will fade over time. Dr. Sadati will explain whether any abdominal scars or stretch marks can be removed during your abdominoplasty. This is dependent on the location of your stretch marks and the amount of skin being removed during your tummy tuck.
The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sadati at our Orange County office.
Types of Tummy Tucks in Orange County
Depending on your anatomy, Dr. Sadati will recommend that you have a complete tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck.
With a complete tummy tuck, an incision is made between starting at one hipbone, then downward in a “U” shape toward your pubic area, and upward to the opposite hipbone. Excess skin and fat is removed from the area, muscles are repaired, and your navel is repositioned. A complete tummy tuck is required for individuals who have a lot of excess tissue.
A mini tummy tuck is an option if you most of your excess tissue is below your navel and you do not need your navel to be repositioned. A mini tummy tuck requires a shorter incision that is mostly hidden in the pubic area.
Liposuction is often included in the tummy tuck, especially for people who have “love handles” and other fat deposits around the midsection. Liposuction allows Dr. Sadati to fully contour your abdominal area.
Your Tummy Tuck Consultation
Unlike many surgeons, Dr. Sadati takes time to get to know his patients. You will have an extensive consultation. During your consultation, you’ll discuss your goals for your tummy tuck as well as your medical history. If you plan to become pregnant in the future, Dr. Sadati will advise you to postpone your abdominoplasty until you are finished having children.
Dr. Sadati will examine your abdomen carefully. He will look at the elasticity of your skin, as well as the amount of excess fat and skin. Dr. Sadati will advise you if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck. The goal of the tummy tuck is to create a flat, natural looking abdominal area that is balanced with your body.
Dr. Sadati believes in patient education. He will discuss the tummy tuck process with you in detail and answer all of your questions.
Dr. Sadati will also discuss the length and location of your incisions, which will be partially hidden in your pubic area. To achieve the aesthetic you desire, Dr. Sadati may also suggest liposuction in order to further define your waist.
You will leave the consultation knowing that Dr. Sadati cares about you and wants the best results possible from your abdominoplasty.
Planning for your Tummy Tuck
You must plan to have someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 48 hours after your surgery so that you can rest.
It’s important to recognize that a tummy tuck is major surgery. Dr. Sadati recommends that you put your recovery first and arrange the help you need. If you have young children or pets, you will need someone to take over for at least two weeks following your surgery. You will not be able to lift more than five pounds for six weeks following your tummy tuck and must avoid twisting your body. This means you will need additional assistance with household chores such as meal preparation and laundry.
You must wear a compression garment for several weeks following your surgery. You must also sleep on your back during this time. Make sure that you have lots of pillows to keep you comfortable or, if possible, have a recliner available to sleep on. Dr. Sadati will explain how to care for your scars and drains.
Tummy Tuck Surgery in Orange County
Your tummy tuck will be performed in our beautiful Newport Beach office in Orange County, California.
During your consultation, Dr. Sadati will have explained his surgical plan. You will know the location of your incisions and the amount of tissue being removed. Your surgery will be performed using general anesthesia and will take between one and five hours.
Immediately before your surgery, Dr. Sadati will make marks on your abdomen to show the location of your incisions, the center of your body, and where your navel will be located. He will also answer any last-minute questions.
All of Dr. Sadati’s surgical team are genuinely caring and sympathetic to his patients’ needs. The staff speaks softly and gently, which gives patients confidence during their tummy tuck and contributes to a positive and reassuring experience. You will not feel any pain or remember your surgery.
Dr. Sadati begins your surgery by making a careful incision in your lower abdominal area. Depending on the extent of the tissue to be removed, this incision may extend between your hips and through your pubic area. He will then loosen your skin from the abdominal wall and use tiny sutures to repair your abdominal muscles. Excess skin and fat will be surgically removed and, if necessary, liposuction will be used to remove additional fat around your midsection.
Finally, your skin is re-draped around the tightened muscles and sutured around your navel. Incisions are carefully closed using layers of fine sutures. Your skin may be closed using sutures, adhesives or surgical tape. Dr. Sadati may also insert drains to help with the healing process. Your incisions will be protected with a surgical dressing.
Recovering from a Tummy Tuck
You will wake up with a compression garment around your midsection. Your incisions will be protected with surgical dressing and you may have drains to collect excess fluid. Because Dr. Sadati uses a nerve blocking technique that lasts about nine hours, you will not be in any pain immediately after your abdominoplasty.
Our recovery nurses will carefully monitor you after surgery. Once you recover from surgery, they will give you prescriptions for pain management and explain how to take care of your incisions and drains. You will be allowed to go home the same day. You must have someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 48 hours after your surgery.
Customer service is a key component of our practice, and Dr. Sadati will personally call you to follow up after your tummy tuck. You will be given Dr. Sadati’s 24 hour contact number in case you need assistance outside of business hours.
Following surgery, some patients describe their abdomen as feeling like they’ve done too many sit-ups; other patients feel that their tummy is tender, swollen or bruised. Dr. Sadati will provide pain medication to keep you comfortable. Dr. Sadati highly recommends icing your abdomen regularly to reduce swelling. He also recommends a homeopathic remedy called Arnica Montana to help speed your healing process.
You will need to rest for the first five days following your tummy tuck. You will return to our office after five days for a follow-up appointment and to have your drains removed.
For the several weeks following surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment 24/7. You must also sleep on your back to give your abdomen time to heal. Because you cannot lift more than ten pounds, you will need help with your children, pets and household chores. You can return to office work after two weeks and normal physical activity after six weeks. Swelling may occur for up to six weeks following your tummy tuck.
Complications of a Tummy Tuck
Short-term risks of a tummy tuck include bleeding, infection, and a change in skin sensation. Long-term complications include numbness or pain, DVT, delayed wound healing, although these risks usually resolve within a year. The results of a tummy tuck are permanent, however the muscles can separate again if stressed by pregnancy or weight gain.
Many of the complications from a tummy tuck can be reduced by choosing a skilled surgeon and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You can also reduce your risks by providing a thorough medical history, as well as carefully following Dr. Sadati’s instructions before and after your surgery.
Cost of a Tummy Tuck in Orange County
An abdominoplasty may be covered by insurance if you have an abdominal hernia. Otherwise a tummy tuck is considered to be cosmetic surgery and is not covered by insurance.
